Card Collecting

My kids are avid card collectors. I collect some too if nothing else to have something in common with them this way they can trade cards and do some of the other social things that can be done with collectible cards. So in a way it is a hobby of sorts. Because I was curious, I looked up the values of some of these cards, particularly I wanted to know how much pokemon cards are worth because that is what the kids are most into.

And what did I find? Some of these cards are damn expensive! I guess I’m not completely surprised as getting the card packs themselves aren’t cheap either, but I noticed some cards could easily be sold for upwards of 100 dollars. It’s kind of crazy actually. My kids actually have some worth about

It all depends on the rarity of the card (how many were made), and any special features associated with them such as holographic (shiny) printing, print errors, popularity of the monster thing on the card, etc. The mark-up on these things are incredible in the after market. I could definitely see how a hobbyist shop could easily make some money, particularly if the items are being sold online, it wouldn’t cost much to ship individual or small groups of cards. Or perhaps it’s just the newly inspired entrepreneur in me.
